How it All Started

Opportunity has a way of poking its head out when you least expect it. For me, it happened in July 2020. I was doom scrolling on Facebook when I came across an auction to help a Lesfic author in need of a medical procedure. Numerous wonderfully supportive Lesfic authors donated to the cause, including naming one of Ali Spooner’s characters in a future book. After placing the winning bid, Ali contacted me to request the name and my general vision of the character. A torrent of personalities from the books I’ve never written rushed to the forefront of my mind. I settled on attorney Alex Hawthorne and sent her a full background on the proposed character. I never expected what happened next.

Instead of sending me a quick thank you and BOLO on the future piece, Ali asked me to write the story myself. And she was serious! My initial reaction was to decline. I didn’t know anything about writing. It’s not like I’m a civil litigation attorney whose job it is to write lengthy documents, conduct in-depth research, and tell my clients’ stories to a captive audience…. oh wait, yes, I am. The more I thought about it, the more intrigued I became. The excuses slowly melted away and once Ali offered to write it with me, there was no way I could pass this up. Not with all the characters in my head demanding their time in the sun. With a deep breath and a prayer to the Goddess above, I said yes, and Hat Trick was born.

This would not be possible without the unyielding support from my wife Lisa, who was crazy enough to marry me almost eight years ago. We met in 2007 when I joined her hockey team and became fast friends. It probably helped our future relationship that we had some serious chemistry on the ice. Hockey can be very sexy, especially when your partner scores a spectacular goal or makes a great play (just ask her ). We played together on several all-female travel hockey teams, culminating with asking her to marry me on the ice in Alaska surrounded by our closest hockey friends. Here’s a link to the proposal if you want to check it out:

I’m pretty active on social media, especially Twitter, and love to share pictures/videos of my fur babies, Luc and Suki. Luc is a feisty Shepherd/Husky who loves playing fetch. He’s also a huge drama queen when his Husky side takes over. He whines loudly every time we leash up for a walk and talks back when he’s begrudgingly obeying a command. When he thinks it’s time for me to wake up, he knocks his tail loudly against the wall, jumps on the bed, and pulls the covers off of me with his snout. Suki is the opposite of her “little” brother. She’s our very smart cattle dog mix who loves to lounge around and do tricks for treats. She herds us around the house when she wants something and helps us keep Luc calm when he gets too rambunctious. We are so proud of our babies. I look forward to flooding your feeds with some cutie pie pictures of them. Give me a follow on Twitte (KLGallagher), Facebook (klgallagher27), and Instagram (klgallagher27). I’m working hard on bringing you more stories soon. Until then, we hope you enjoy Hat Trick as much as we did writing it. The story of Janelle Leblanc, a hockey star turned professional coach, and Alex Hawthorne, a no-nonsense, tough-as-nails defense attorney, is one of breaking barriers and overcoming tragedy, only to find it may not be enough to let love in. Can they conquer their fears for a chance at happiness? Or are the demons of the past too powerful to defeat? There is only one way to find out. Join us for the launch of Hat Trick on October 1, 2021, through Affinity Rainbow Publications.
